#066-070: Caffeine for apnea of prematurity

Incubator & Neonatology Review Podcast

Hello friends 👋

Have you ever wondered: who had the idea to give caffeine to babies? We certainly did. Caffeine is an ubiquitous medication in the NICU, and yet I can hardly remember anyone teaching me about how the practice of treating apnea of prematurity using caffeine came about.

This week Daphna and I do a deep dive into the history of caffeine and the pathophysiology of apnea of prematurity.

The articles discussed on the show this week are linked below.

We are also attaching the notes Daphna and I took on the CAP trial and

We are also sharing a presentation covering the points discussed on this week's podcast episodes. This presentation aims to make clinical teaching more convenient if you wanted to teach the material covered on the podcast this week. Enjoy!

Performance 11 Years After Caffeine Therapy for Apnea of Prematurity
This follow-up study to the Caffeine for Apnea of Prematurity trial evaluates whether neonatal caffeine citrate therapy is associated with improved functional outcomes 11 years later.
Pathophysiologic Mechanisms Underlying Apnea of Prematurity
After completing this article, readers should be able to: Idiopathic apnea of prematurity is a common disorder that requires therapeutic intervention to avoid potential morbidity in preterm infants who require neonatal intensive care. Severe, recurrent apneic episodes may lead to multiple investigat…
