#096-100 - Group B Streptococcal Disease

Incubator & Neonatology Review Podcast

Hello Friends 👋

This week, we are reviewing the evidence surrounding Group B Streptococcal (GBS) disease. We chose this topic because of the recent (2019) publication of the AAP's report on the screening and management of infants with GBS disease. You may be familiar with the CDC guidance published in 2010, but did you know that the 2019 revisions were published not by the CDC but rather by the ACOG and the AAP? The AAP recommendations are quite interesting because they offer clinicians three methods of potentially screening for GBS disease in full term infants. We had the pleasure of chatting with the author of this AAP report, Dr. Karen Puopolo MD PhD, on thursday and she explained how she and her team approached the issue of screening for GBS and why they felt that offering several options for screening infants to clinicians was the most comprehensive way of dealing with this issue. Updated Guidance: Prevention and Management of Perinatal Group B Streptococcus Infection - PubMed
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) remains the most common cause of neonatal early-onset sepsis among term infants and a major cause of late-onset sepsis among both term and preterm infants. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published sepa…
Management of Infants at Risk for Group B Streptococcal Disease - PubMed
Group B streptococcal (GBS) infection remains the most common cause of neonatal early-onset sepsis and a significant cause of late-onset sepsis among young infants. Administration of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis is the only currently available effective strategy for the prevention of perinatal…
Prevention of Group B Streptococcal Early-Onset Disease in Newborns
Early-Onset Neonatal Sepsis, E coli, and the Need for Novel Protection Strategies
This cohort study assesses the current incidence, microbiology, morbidity, and mortality of early-onset sepsis among a cohort of term and preterm infants.
Risk-Based Approach to Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis Management
This study examines the effect of neonatal early-onset sepsis risk prediction models on sepsis evaluations and antibiotic use and assesses their safety in a large integrated health care system.
Stratification of risk of early-onset sepsis in newborns ≥ 34 weeks’ gestation - PubMed
It is possible to combine objective maternal data with evolving objective neonatal clinical findings to define more efficient strategies for the evaluation and treatment of EOS in term and late preterm infants. Judicious application of our scheme could result in decreased antibiotic treatment in 80,…
Estimating the probability of neonatal early-onset infection on the basis of maternal risk factors - PubMed
A predictive model based on information available in the immediate perinatal period performs better than algorithms based on risk-factor threshold values. This model establishes a prior probability for newborn sepsis, which could be combined with neonatal physical examination and laboratory values t…
Development and Implementation of an Early-Onset Sepsis Calculator to Guide Antibiotic Management in Late Preterm and Term Neonates - PubMed
